Rhodri Williams, Chair of the Welsh Language Board today welcomed the launch of the new Welsh language spellchecker and hyphenator, produced for Microsofts latest software, Office XP.

The spellchecker was developed by the Board, Canolfan Bedwyr at University of Wales Bangor and Microsoft itself, and the three organisations got together at the National Assembly for Wales to demonstrate the spellchecker to Andrew Davies AM, the Assemblys e-Minister.

Rhodri Williams said: With more and more people in Wales depending on computers both in their work and everyday lives, this is a vitally important development for the further normalisation of the language. This is a great boost for Welsh after all, Microsoft is one of the biggest companies in the world.

The spellchecker and hyphenator will ensure that PC users all over the world will be able to check their Welsh free of charge from now on, thanks to the co-operation between the Board, Canolfan Bedwyr and Microsoft, he added. Richard Smith, specialist sales manager Microsoft, said:

We are delighted to have had the opportunity to work with the Welsh Language Board and Canolfan Bedwyr at the University of Wales Bangor, and develop tools to boost support for the Welsh language in Office XP.

Office XP Welsh proofing tools add-in, available free of charge on our website, is another example of Microsofts commitment to providing support for languages where possible within our products and we hope this commitment will give our Welsh customers a better experience of using Office XP.

The work of developing the spellchecker was done by Canolfan Bedwyr at the University of Wales Bangor on behalf of Microsoft, and Dr Geraint Wyn Jones, Director of the Centre said:

This spellchecker and hyphenator is an important development for Welsh speakers using computers. From now on, all Welsh speakers and learners will have free access to a spellchecker which will work automatically in Office XP. Canolfan Bedwyr is delighted to be involved in this project, which builds on the work already achieved at the University of Wales Bangor with both CySill and CysGair over recent years.

Speaking at the launch of the spellchecker, Assembly e-Minister Andrew Davies said: The Welsh Language Board are to be congratulated for their stirling work with Canolfan Bedwyr at UW Bangor and Microsoft in turning this project into reality. As this software is compatible with the very latest office technology, it will play a vital role in encouraging people in Wales to make real progress in their use and take-up of information technology.

If we are to create a more prosperous economy for the future it is essential that Wales is at the heart of the new technology revolution. The Assembly Governments strategy Cymru Ar-Lein Online for a better Wales, which will be launched next month, recognises that better access to broadband technology and developing and raising ICT skills will be key to achieving this."

The spellchecker and hyphenator can be downloaded from the Microsoft website - to any PC which works with Microsoft Office XP.
